Sasikala and Suresh lived in the city slums. Suresh was a daily laborer; they had two children, a girl and a boy. Saravanan 6years and Sasikala 7 years. The father was an alcoholic. He used to drink daily and beat his wife. She used to complain every day to the neighbors but no one could do any thing the wife .for the sake of the children was clinging on to the husband there was no one to help her. One fine day he was drunk and he began a fight and it went on to the extent of burning her to ashes when the children began shouting and crying; they were trembling with fear they ran out of the house to the neighbors, first the neighbors did not think there was some thing very serious but later when they came to see the father who ran away leaving his burnt wife nothing could be done to save her, It was a pathetic situation.. Then the children were given to the grand mother who is very old and also in a very poor condition. The grandmother being very old, she could not care for the children.
